Customer Review :

AWESOME PLAYER!! replacing my PBO and WD : AIOS HD Media Center, Full HD 1080p, Gigabit Network, USB 3.0 data, Flash Reader, 3.5" SATA 2

I have been using Xtreamer for media for as long as they've existed and have had quite the number of challenges with it. Their latest product (the Prodigy) has been a disaster for me and I started looking around for a modern player that was good at playing videos rather than being mediocre at everything. Truth be told, if I want apps I'll run them on my LG home theatre system or Mac.
The AIOS is simple and after I upgraded the firmware to the lastest version (not obvious to find on their site) and NOT tempted to download one of the may unofficial firmwares, I was off to a flying start.

The good:
- It plays anything I "threw" at it flawlessly.
- It works great with my Synology DLNA 411j server.
- It has 3 USB ports and will even work with 6 disks attached to it via a USB hub.
- It boots 5 times faster than any Xtreamer I've ever seen.
- The folks on the support forum are fast, good, and nice.
- The box stays fast, never froze on me, and is cool (it sits in a cabinet behind a glass door.)
- The 'clock' on the front is handy (not big but still...)

The bad:
- The remote control is clunky. I use a Harmony 1100 so no sweat there.
- Support for subtitles is clunky. I need them on all the time but that requires me to turn them on every time a movie starts. There are no global settings for subs, which is annoying. Once selected they work well though.
- The manuals are clunky. For example, to get full DTS over HDMI, you need to set the firmware to 'RAW' support. Nowhere does that get documented.
- The apps are clunky. I don't care about apps though.
- The UI is clunky and looks like early 2000's. I can live with it, but looking at the UI that Xtreamer uses (on the same architecture), Pivos can so lot better.

The ugly:
- There are some weird warnings coming up when you start the box (such as 'can't create files') that may throw you off. It seems that the firmware is still very much a work-in-progress and given the amount of revisions that are posted I believe we won't be done anytime soon. It's quite unacceptable to have to 'flash' the firmware though, so Pivos will need to ensure that subsequent updates can (a) be loaded in a non-destructive manner, and (b) via the internet rather than a USB stick.

All-in-all though, for less than $100 I am really happy with my AIOS and look forward to using it a lot.
