Elevate your television viewing with the amazingly vibrant imagery and audio of the 40-inch Samsung LNR409D LCD TV, which employ Samsung's most advanced TV panel technology. It's also ready for high-definition telecasts right out of the box, with a built-in HDTV tuner that lets you receive and decode free, over-the-air high-def broadcasts where available (optional antenna required). You can also receive HD broadcasts from a separately available, HD-compatible set-top receiver or cable/satellite TV box via the component video or lossless HDMI connections. The set's CableCARD port means you can also receive digital cable television systems services directly from a compatible cable system without requiring a bulky, external cable box.
This set features a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, super-fast 8 ms (millisecond) response time (great for fast-action video games), 170-degree viewing angle, brightness rating of 500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), and an amazing 3000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.)
The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. Samsung's patented My Color Control technology allows you to control specific colors without affecting the whole screen, providing a mix of primary and secondary color-control selections: white, red, pink, yellow, green and blue. Brightness and contrast levels are enhanced for deeper, richer blacks with greater detail, and more natural whites.
The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time, to reduce dramatically edge image artifacts while improving transition detail. A built-in brightness sensor automatically detects the ambient light and adjusts the TVÕs luminance accordingly. Other video enhancements include picture-in-picture (PIP) for watching two different video sources at once (such as TV and your PC) and 10-bit video processing for 6.4 billion lifelike colors.
High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass. This set's Directionalized Acoustic Chamber System technology overcomes the acoustic limitations of traditional speakers by projecting sound evenly throughout the room through horn-shaped speakers. The product: Rather than use the cold cathode fluorescent lighting (CCFL) backlights that power most LCD flat panels, Samsung's LNR409D--a 40-inch flat-panel LCD HDTV--relies on the world's first flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) backlight unit. The advantage? Unlike CCFLs (which look like tiny versions of the tubular lights above your office cubicle), FFLs have a paper-thin form factor that produces light from its entire surface, offering the potential for greater picture uniformity, better brightness, and a higher contrast ratio. The specs include:
40-inch wide-screen LCD flat-panel HDTV
Flat fluorescent lamp (FFL) backlight unit
Built-in ATSC tuner and CableCard slot
The price: The LNR409D will be available in May for $4,999.
The prospects: Rather than marry itself to one technology, Samsung has hedged its bets, using LED backlights in its larger LNR460D LCD panel while incorporating rival FFL technology into this one. It's a pragmatic business decision for the company and an exciting one for consumers--more choice is never a bad thing. And while the LNR460D's $5,000 asking price is quite reasonable in the world of large-screen LCDs, we're hoping FFL technology will lead to more affordable flat panels.
